Figure Out What You Want From Your G+ Experience

So, what do you want?

A lot of people still aren’t sure what to do when they get to G+. They feel like — ok, I’m here — so what now? This is probably something you remember from your first encounter with G+.

I’ve written a ton of tips on how to find people and groups. I’ve talked about interacting and being a part of conversations. But when +Peter McDermott asked me during my interview, “What are the first three tips you’d give a new G+ user,” I became fairly flustered (which may or may not come across in the video). The reason for this is because I was starting to tease out a tip that I had never given… a tip that probably doesn’t apply to JUST G+.

In the article linked below, I discuss the importance of having a purpose. I’m not a motivational speaker by any means. I’m not a business man. I’m a 24-year-old grad student with probably too much free time, but I think figuring out your purpose is the most important FIRST thing you can do for most life endeavors. Right?

Nobody should question the “quality” or “motivation” of their purpose — it’s yours. Do what you wanna do. You can figure this out in any number of ways from something as nebulous as, “My purpose is to be entertained” to something as specific as “I want to create a digital relationship with a public relations team manager who can teach me a little about how she or he does her or his job”.

Another important point: make sure that what you want is something you can get on G+. If your purpose is to have someone deliver you a birthday cake wearing an outfit made of salmon, you might want to refocus your efforts. But hey, if that’s what you want, I’d LOVE to add you to my Circles and watch you go for it. That’d be so awesome.

Either way, you’re going to be able to figure out your plan as soon as you are able to state what your purpose is.

Also, and I don’t think I mention this in the article: your purpose is not something you have to set in stone. Allow it to change; allow it to grow; allow one to find you. Hope you enjoy the article.
