My degree is in Philosophy, and I’m fairly certain that my tendency toward nihilistic thought not-so-subtly surfaces in most of my work. My internal landscape is something akin to Edgar Allan Poe and Dr. Seuss hanging out together drinking Jello shots and doing Mad Libs—an aberrant collusion that also likely oozes its way onto my canvases. A friend once summarized my work by saying "there’s a meta-theme of poisonous fiction running through Cayenne’s creations, of whatever nature." I don’t know that it’s high praise—it might even have been intended as an insult—but it resonates, and that alone says something about my artistic intent.
After a lifetime of more "crafty" endeavors, including jewelry-making, textile and glass painting, and an odd affection for making alien dioramas, I made the leap to canvas in December of 2005, and my new-found passion for it eclipsed all else. I’m self-taught, and very much enjoying the process of daftly bumbling around while I attempt to locate my artistic voice.
